What Is A Neonatologist?

Find out what a neonatologist does and how they can provide care for your newborn.

Our Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas paediatrician and neonatologist Dr. Gwen McDeigan, specializes in providing full-spectrum health care to newborns. As a paediatrician, Dr. McDeigan provides comprehensive and routine aspects of health to all children and teens in and around Nassau, New Providence; however, as a neonatologist as well, she can also provide expert skills and knowledge to provide care to newborns who are dealing with health problems or were a high-risk birth.

When should I turn to a neonatologist?

As a paediatrician, we are always here to provide preventive and routine checkups, screenings and health care to all children and teens; however, as a neonatologist, here are just some of the additional and more specialized services we offer at our Nassau, New Providence, practice,

  • Recommend proper nutritional plans to improve sick newborns
  • Treat newborns dealing with life-threatening health problems
  • Coordinate care with OBGYNs and any other healthcare professional on your medical care team
  • Diagnose, manage and treat infections, congenital defects and other conditions at birth or shortly after
  • Determine whether a newborn can benefit from surgery or other procedures or treatment options

Instead of turning to a neonatologist and a separate paediatrician, Dr. McDeigan offers two in one, making it easier for newborns to get the outpatient care they need for follow-ups and additional treatment plans without coordinating with another paediatrician. We can do everything from our office.

What should I expect from neonatal care?

While we are here to provide preventive and routine checkups, screenings and care to all children, if you had premature labor or your newborn is dealing with childbirth complications or congenital disabilities, our neonatologist should be the first paediatrician you turn to. After all, Dr. McDeigan and her team understand the unique challenges a medical problem could cause on a small, developing body. Dr. McDeigan has received the specialized training necessary to evaluate, diagnose and treat most medical issues that impact a newborn.

You know your newborn is in safe, caring hands when you turn to our paediatrician and neonatologist in Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas. To schedule an evaluation with our team or an appointment for a high-risk pregnancy, call The Paediatric Centre at (242) 322-5025.
