Why Immunizations Are Important

Protect your child from dangerous communicable diseases by getting them vaccinated!

This is probably one of the biggest topics that we talk to parents about. After all, we understand that there is a lot of misinformation out there when it comes to childhood immunizations. Our Nassau, New Providence, BS, paediatrician Dr. Gwen McDeigan is happy to sit down with any parent to discuss the importance of immunizations and to address any questions or concerns parents might have about vaccinations.

Here are some of the top benefits of getting kids vaccinated:

Immunizations save lives

It’s amazing how far medicine has come. Today, we can protect children from more and more diseases than we ever could before. Including diseases like polio that left children injured or disabled. Without vaccinations, some of these viruses are dangerous enough to kill. Luckily, with the polio vaccine, we are now about to eliminate this disease from the US altogether.

Vaccines are safe

From talk shows to news segments, there has been much debate on the subject of vaccine safety. However, while vaccinations can cause some minor discomfort, redness, or pain around the injection site after being administered, these side effects are minimal compared to what could happen if your child didn’t have the vaccine. Furthermore, allergic reactions to vaccines are very rare. In fact, the benefits of getting vaccines certainly far outweigh the possible side effects that could occur.

Vaccines also protect your community

Over the last few years, we’ve seen a decline in the number of kids here in the Bahamas who’ve gotten their MMR1 vaccine (the measles, mumps, and rubella shot). In fact, it was just in 2019 that officials declared that we had a measles outbreak. So, what can we learn from this? By vaccinating our children and keeping up with their immunizations, we can protect the Nassau, New Providence, BS, community as well as your child’s classmates and family members so outbreaks like these don’t continue to happen.

Vaccines can actually save you money

Many communicable diseases can leave children disabled if they don’t get vaccinated, which causes a serious financial burden for the family. Just by vaccinating your child routinely, you could prevent all of these more serious complications from happening. Talk to your Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas paediatrician about when your child should be vaccinated, and which vaccines are right for them.

It’s important to keep all children up to date on their immunizations. Our Nassau, New Providence, BS, paediatrician will make sure that your little one stays healthy at all of their well-child checkups. To schedule your child’s next visit, or to ask questions about their upcoming vaccine schedule, call Dr. McDeigan of The Paediatric Centre at 242-322-5025.
