What Is a Sports Physical?

If your child wants to try out for a team sport at school, chances are the school will request a sports physical. These are done for the school to ensure that your child is fit and healthy enough to partake in the sport. Most importantly, a sports physical can help your child avoid injuries.

Sports physicals can also be called pre-participation physicals (PPE).

Dr. Gwen McDeigan is an experienced Paediatrician and Neonatologist who practices at The Paediatric Centre. One of her many services is a sports physical in Nassau, New Providence.

Why Does a School Require a Sports Physical?

It's important for the school to be across any pre-existing conditions your child may have. For example, if your child requires a specific medication, like an inhaler for asthma, it's important that your child's coach is across this. They also need to be across any allergies your child may have.

Sports physicals may also be a state requirement for each school.

Dr. McDeigan at The Paediatric Centre offers a sports physical as part of her services, in Nassau, New Providence.

What Happens During a Sports Physical?

When your child undergoes a sports physical, Dr. McDeigan looks at your child's medical history along with any current ailments and illnesses - it's not too different from a regular exam!

The doctor will also likely do the following tests:

  • Height and weight check
  • Blood pressure reading
  • Vision test to see if the child may need prescription glasses
  • Check joints, posture and muscles
  • Check ears, nose and throat
  • Evaluate the condition of the child’s heart and lungs

After the exam, the doctor will provide your child with a note to give to their school, indicating whether they are cleared to play their chosen sport.
